ORIGINAL ULTRAS
Reproduction of the famous wall painting from 59-79A.D. depicting a brawl that broke out in the amphitheatre of Pompeii, kept in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. Tacitus (The Annals XIV, 17) recounts that in 59A.D. during a gladiatorial show exhibited by Livineius Regulus, a petty brawl between the inhabitants of Nuceria and Pompeii soon degenerated into bloodshed, leaving many dead and wounded, especially amongst the people of Nuceria. In Rome, the Senate reacted by suspending all public events in Pompeii for ten years, dissolving the illegal associations formed, and punishing Livineius and those who had stirred the crowd to violence with exile.
